Double Negative Examination
30th of April, 2008
The last few exams I’ve taken have all included double negative questions which, when they’re multiple choice and worded the way they are, makes it really hard. I’ve gotten questions wrong where I knew the answer but was so confused by the cryptic question I marked it wrong.
Here’s an example of what I mean:
Please select the statement which is incorrect:
a) Janey isn’t John or Xavier’s cousin.
b) Janey is John’s cousin but isn’t Mary’s Daughter.
c) The diagram indicates Janey is John’s cousin but this is incorrect.
d) The diagram indicates Janey isn’t John’s cousin but this is incorrect.
It’s extremely difficult.
Often the questions can be simplified by not asking for the answer which is incorrect. It bothers me when we get questions like this because it becomes a lot less about the test subject and a lot more about being able to decipher logic, something I’m terrible at.

Boy that’s the truth. My exams are not dissimilar. Or are they?

By any chance are you referring to the mid-semester Database Design exam? Just out of curiosity what mark did you get for it?

Yep, the Database Design exam was the most recent. I got 9/15.
