Steve Jobs and Bill Gates

1st of June, 2007

If you haven’t heard, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had an interview on stage together for the first time in over 20 years. The set of videos, broken into 7 parts can be found on the D website starting with Part One. There’s a stark difference in personalities that makes it great to watch - Jobs almost comes across as a crazy person, a charismatic crazy person.

The conversation is brilliant. Hearing and watching the two people talk together about how they started the personal computer phenomenon, what almost my entire life is based around, is very cool. There’s so much history behind them both and it’s obvious in the interview, there’s an awkward tension and the crowd is trying to applaud everything.

Jeff Atwood at Coding Horror puts it well.

Their history feels like our history, my history

I definitely haven’t been in the computer industry for as long as someone like Jeff Atwood but I do remember using the Apple Lisa in grade one when I was six years old, I remember our first computer an IBM 386 running Windows 3.1, the first generation iMacs in grade 6. All of it’s down to Gates and Jobs..

Jobs has this amazing charisma over Gates, which really makes sense, Gates is a programmer, Steve is a businessman. Like a lot of the things I come across, I find it very difficult to put the way it makes me feel into words, so go watch.
