Reasonability and Rationality

30th of July, 2007

I value reasonability above all other personality traits. It sounds mediocre because it’s most often heard while being told “that’s reasonable” when having to concede to something you don’t want to do. For me, if something is reasonable, that’s it, that’s all it needs to be.

If you come across a person with an unreasonable belief. If you can then put a reasonable argument to a person and still have them irrationally believe, there is no hope for that person.

For example, I know someone who wants a Hummer. The 4WD, not the sexual act. Wanting a Hummer is unreasonable. Posing the following arguments to this person, they still wanted a Hummer:

  1. It costs a fortune purchase. For the same amount of money you could afford a new sports car with thousands to spare. For the same amount of money you could afford a car that transports you just as well with tens of thousands to spare.
  2. It costs a fortune to drive. It’s mileage is more comparable to that of an army tank than a commuter car. A Hummer costs more to cost more.
  3. For that reason, it’s extremely bad for the environment. The worse the mileage the more damaging to the environment.
  4. It’s difficult to park.
  5. It’s difficult to maneuver in general. Especially around city streets.
  6. It’s obnoxious. I draw parallels with fat people in airplanes. Just like airplane seats are not made for 200kg men, roads are not made for 6 ton 4WDs with a wheelbase longer than any other car. Any extra space taken by you is space taken from others. It’s rude.
  7. It’s not safer. Because it will label you as an asshole and therefore a target for people that like evening out the karma scales. Like taunting an angry dog behind a fence, it’ll just make them all the more determined to get at you.
  8. It still only seats 5. If you’re argument is people moving, get a van that seats 7 or 8 and is still half the size and price of a Hummer. But you don’t really need to carry that many people anyway - you’re not a Maxi Taxi.
  9. Purchasing a car (any car) for it’s girl pulling power is not a reasonable argument. You do not want a girl that’s going to be with you because of the car you drive.

For a teenager in the suburbs there is no reasonable, rational argument for a Hummer. If you still want a Hummer, there is no hope for you, it’s only a matter of time before natural selection takes it’s course.
