Digg Gets Pwnd By Its Users, Hilarity Ensues
2nd of May, 2007
There’s a few reasons I don’t like Digg but I won’t go into them for now. What matters is that right now every story on the front page of Digg’s tech section is about the decryption key for HD-DVD that allows you copy HD-DVDs. That key can be found through a quick Google search.
What’s so funny about this is that when the first keys were getting published Digg was deleting the articles and banning users who submitted them. So then articles were submitted about Digg’s censorship and then more and more and more articles were submitted and they were all getting dugg. Articles were being submitted, dugg and front paged quicker than Digg could delete them.
It really doesn’t bother me that Digg deleted articles with the key. They were legally obliged to do so, fair enough, that’s not censorship, that’s abiding by the law. I just think it’s hilarious that a system that prides itself on user moderation is being absolutely destroyed because it’s user moderated.
Nearly every front page article now has almost 3000+ diggs. I can’t wait until this weeks Diggnation, run by the people behind Digg, where they talk about the most dugg articles of the week. This week, every one of the most dugg stories will be about the encryption key.
