It’s hard to overestimate how disconnected I feel without an internet connection. I’ve spent the last week and a bit in a tiny Scottish village with, surprisingly, no WiFi for me to steal. Now I’m in a Parisian apartment and the open Wireless networks are so abundant I thought I’d make a quick update. Continue reading →
If you haven’t heard, for a long time now there’s been a big fuss about the $100 Laptop which is now finally shipping. It’s also known as the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program. The basic idea is that Westerners buy two of these computers, they get one and the other one is given to a child in a third world, poverty stricken countries. Continue reading →
Think, for a second, about what a fashion parade really is. I’ve spoken about this a million times but Windows XP’s default text rendering never fails to amaze me with it’s ugliness. After installing Windows to play Red Alert 2 test websites in Internet Explorer it’s always depressing to see your Georgia heavy website displayed with no or extremely poor anti-aliasing. It bothers me when friends here complain about how Facebook tells everyone what they’ve been doing. You can turn it off with the click of a slider. It bothers me more when highly web application competent people complain about Facebook’s privacy stealing features, including their new Beacon service, that has the potential to tell people what you purchase on external websites. It’s December and I’m in Calgary, the world’s coldest place. You hear stories about people getting depressed by the overcast days and short hours of sunlight but never thought it actually had an effect on people. It does but there’s one thing that can always cheer me up — putting on 8 layers of clothing, lacing up the skates and playing some hockey. Continue reading →
