European Bureau

31st of December, 2007

It’s hard to overestimate how disconnected I feel without an internet connection. I’ve spent the last week and a bit in a tiny Scottish village with, surprisingly, no WiFi for me to steal. Now I’m in a Parisian apartment and the open Wireless networks are so abundant I thought I’d make a quick update. Continue reading →

The $100 Laptop

22nd of December, 2007

If you haven’t heard, for a long time now there’s been a big fuss about the $100 Laptop which is now finally shipping. It’s also known as the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program. The basic idea is that Westerners buy two of these computers, they get one and the other one is given to a child in a third world, poverty stricken countries. Continue reading →

Fashion Parades

20th of December, 2007

Think, for a second, about what a fashion parade really is. A group of skeleton thin, sour looking women walking and posing completely unnaturally down a runway wearing clothes so ridiculous and impractical that even the designers don’t bother putting them into production. Why do they show fashion parade documentaries on flights? Why is there an entire TV channel dedicated to this? Wait, why is there an entire industry dedicated to it? Continue reading →

How I Feel About Going Home

14th of December, 2007

I’ve been in Canada for three an a half months, I’ve been traveling over four months and have another three weeks in Europe after I leave Canada on the 19th. While it feels like time has flown by, it also feels like the day I left Australia was a long time ago.

The Paradox of Choice

14th of December, 2007

Through Daring Fireball I found The Paradox of Choice TED Talk by Barry Schwartz. It’s extremely interesting, well spoken and worth watching the entire 20 minutes.

Area Girl Takes 2000th Almost Identical Digital Photograph

10th of December, 2007

My apologies to The Onion.

CALGARY—Friends of 19-year-old Jessica Bow gathered at a karaoke bar last night to have a drink, sing, dance and take photographs. The night began with photographs of the small group getting ready to go out, followed by photographs arriving at the bar and photographs of them taking their first sips of flavoured vodka and tonic. An Illegal Act

8th of December, 2007

I’ve spoken about this a million times but Windows XP’s default text rendering never fails to amaze me with it’s ugliness. After installing Windows to play Red Alert 2 test websites in Internet Explorer it’s always depressing to see your Georgia heavy website displayed with no or extremely poor anti-aliasing. I know Clear Type can be switched on and I know Vista does a much better job but it’s off by default and even on, it’s a pathetic attempt at anti-aliasing. Continue reading →

The Facebook Hate Club

7th of December, 2007

It bothers me when friends here complain about how Facebook tells everyone what they’ve been doing. You can turn it off with the click of a slider. It bothers me more when highly web application competent people complain about Facebook’s privacy stealing features, including their new Beacon service, that has the potential to tell people what you purchase on external websites. Continue reading →

Disrespecting the Grid

7th of December, 2007

It’s December and I’m in Calgary, the world’s coldest place. You hear stories about people getting depressed by the overcast days and short hours of sunlight but never thought it actually had an effect on people. It does but there’s one thing that can always cheer me up — putting on 8 layers of clothing, lacing up the skates and playing some hockey. Continue reading →
