San Francisco

28th of August, 2007

The first thing I noticed about San Francisco was how cold it was. A San Francisco summer is about as cold than a Brisbane Winter. Next was the distinct lack of trees — it’s the city equivalent of a desert. It probably has more trees than New York but in New York the buildings are so tall they provide shade. Continue reading →

Leaving New York City

26th of August, 2007

I’m sitting in the Tom Bradley terminal at LA International. It’s 1:33am local but my body thinks it’s 4:33am. This isn’t my terminal but I can’t check-in until 4am and this terminal is much more comfortable. I feel awake and alert. The flight from NY was empty enough to afford me an entire row to myself. I slept like a baby the whole trip, the first time I’ve slept properly on a plane. So yeah, I’m out of New York. Continue reading →

Virginia

25th of August, 2007

I’m sitting in the middle of Central Park. On a bench shared with other young people reading newspapers. I’m reading this week’s Onion. There’s a clean, duck filled lake in front of us and I can hear a waterfall. It’s about time I wrote about my stay in Virginia. Continue reading →

New York City

20th of August, 2007

There is a store a block from my hotel room that sells I love NY t-shirts. Nothing unusual about that, except that they sell 8 for $10. It’s unbelievable. Homeless people should use their donations to buy I love NY t-shirts, it’s the best value they’ll ever get.

Long Haul

18th of August, 2007

I am writing this from QF107 from Los Angeles International to JFK in New York City. I won’t be able to publish this until I get to my internet-toting hotel room in NYC.

It’s making me think. How difficult would it be to equip aeroplanes with WiFi? A satellite connection fed into a series of wireless routers. On that note, there’s also no laptop outlets in economy on 747s, so much for that Magsafe plane adapter I bought. Anyone want to buy a brand new, unopened Magsafe plane adapter?

A New Logotype

15th of August, 2007

Myriad Pro used to be one of my favourite fonts. Semibold Myriad Pro to be specific. I’ve since rediscovered the joy that is Helvetica. Compared to Helvetica, Myriad Pro looks amateurish and oddly proportioned. Similar to the way Arial looks compared to Helvetica.

SLR Photography

14th of August, 2007

Around a month ago I bought a brand new Nikon D40 for $600. It is a digital SLR still camera, it came with a 18-55mm AF Nikkor lens and has a built-in flash. It is my first SLR camera - film or digital - and I know next to nothing about photography.

Travel and Blogging

12th of August, 2007

On Friday I’ll board a plane heading to New York City. I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to blog about the experience. For a little while I’ve been using a Tumblr account but it doesn’t feel like it suits.

Facebook Has a Degenerative Disease

9th of August, 2007

It’s called Apps and it’s turning Facebook into MySpace. Top friends, comments that allow images and video, quizzes and music players, for every MySpace feature Facebook lacks at it’s core there’s a Facebook App to make it happen. They don’t just add MySpace functionality either, they add MySpace bad design.

Obnoxious Advertisements

8th of August, 2007

Jason Fried recently wrote about a post that TechCrunch wrote about Mundo, a web based IM app for the iPhone with a price tag. Fried called their bullshit on complaining about the price but I don’t think he said enough about their offer of alternatives.

Semantically Correct Bold and Italics

Never use <i> or <b> tags. Many people will disagree with me but they are wrong. There is no appropriate use for them anymore.

Giving Up

7th of August, 2007

Just like Scott Adam’s golden happiness ratio I think giving up is an important part of staying happy. Adam’s argues that “Once you achieve about 80% rightness, any extra effort is rarely worth the effort.” I think never give up is bad advice.

Profanity

6th of August, 2007

I swear. I think it’s ridiculous that some people can be offended by simple words. If a word used in non-threatening, non-derogatory context can send you into a tizzy, you have much bigger problems. But without these people, swearing wouldn’t be nearly as useful.

Book Prices

5th of August, 2007

This afternoon I was at a store, Big W in fact. The kind of store that sells food, DVDs, televisions, towels, clothes and books, everything. I wasn’t planning on buying a book but being someone that loves to read and loves to buy things like books, I stopped and I contemplated a book purchase.

Recently Enjoying

3rd of August, 2007

If you haven’t noticed or you’re a feed subscriber, there’s a section in my sidebar with a sporadically updated list of writing and audio I enjoy. I have amazing taste so it’d be in your best interest to take notice. It’s just been updated with these five, fine publications.

On WordPress Bloat

2nd of August, 2007

The latest WordPress tarball weighs 803kb. It takes about 5 minutes to download on a 64kb/s throttled connection. On a normal connection it takes about 10 seconds. Unzipped it weighs 3.9MB. The whole thing, unzipped, weighs less than a typical MP3 file.

A New Brisbane Creative Website

1st of August, 2007

Blogging hasn’t been as regular as it normally is recently. Part of the reason has been due to the taxing experience that is organising a long and varied holiday, part due to being flooded with work and part putting the finishing touches on a new Brisbane Creative website.
