Arguments

31st of July, 2007

I recently listened to (another) great This American Life installment about Marriage. The first act is a psychologist researching the predictability of married couples staying together. There was interesting discussion about arguments.

Reasonability and Rationality

30th of July, 2007

I value reasonability above all other personality traits. It sounds mediocre because it’s most often heard while being told “that’s reasonable” when having to concede to something you don’t want to do. For me, if something is reasonable, that’s it, that’s all it needs to be.

Hanging Punctuation is Ugly

29th of July, 2007

In one of Mark Boulton’s articles on better typography he suggests hanging punctuation. I came across this article after seeing someone implementing (and later defending) hanging punctuation on their own websites.

Sunglasses

25th of July, 2007

I don’t wear sunglasses. I should. The problem is today’s sunglass fashion is ugly and since ugly is not my style, I’m having trouble choosing a pair that is not a detriment to my stunning good looks or level of cool. Continue reading →

The Best CS3 Replacement Icon Set

23rd of July, 2007

Generally I’m a huge fan of application icons in OS X but Adobe really choked with the family of CS3 icons. All together they look brilliant but if you happen to have the wrong combination of apps side by side in your dock, just like any other inharmonious colour palette, they look like shit. So I started looking for replacements.

Web App Idea No. 331

20th of July, 2007

This one’s simple. An exercise recorder, grapher and stats generator. It would only work with recordable types of exercise, long distance running, swimming, weight training, rowing, etc. Basically something that very simply records say, for running - date, distance and time, which can then be placed on all kinds of graphs to illustrate progress.

Web App Idea No. 649

19th of July, 2007

There’s Digg and the like, continually updated, socially controlled. Then there’s newspapers, updated daily, basically static, perhaps a slight variations in a morning and evening issue. There’s a case for consuming news through a website like Digg and there’s a case for newspapers. I want the best of both worlds.

Tetris Bricks

18th of July, 2007

I recently came across a little game called Diggtris. It received a huge amount of diggs, as anything with “Digg” in the title does. Ignoring this game’s obvious uselessness for a moment, they’ve screwed up the most important part of Tetris — they’ve added their own, utterly inferior bricks.

I’ve Been Ripped by a Splogger

17th of July, 2007

Theme taken down. He’s still using my Chewy wordpress theme, a theme available for public download, which as a splogger, I am not happy about but there’s not much I can do.

The iPhone Web Irony

17th of July, 2007

For years we’ve had the web on mobile devices. PDAs, mobile phones and the like. All slightly different, not really showing the web how it looks in a desktop web browser and not really showing it dumbed down, stylesheet-less. There’s millions of these devices out there and have been for years and years. Bear with me, I’m getting to a point.

Pasteosaurus and an Incredible Photographic Journal

15th of July, 2007

This action packed weekend involved the conservation of money and the creation of a photoblog at photos.jimwhimpey.com, bookmark, subscribe and I’ll make it worth your while. It’s in preparation for the Nikon D40 that will, with any luck, will arrive at my doorstep tomorrow. I know nothing about photography, it’ll be fun. Continue reading →

Someone Tried To Scam Me On eBay

14th of July, 2007

During the week long sale of my HP iPaq someone tried to scam me. Although eBay did send me a warning as soon as I was contacted by them, I admittedly ignored it. Being the diligent internet user I am it was easy to tell the moment I was trying to be scammed but to a less experienced user (that doesn’t read eBay alerts) it would be quite easy to fall for. For that reason, I’ll document my experience. Continue reading →

Pen Pals Are Obsolete

13th of July, 2007

Does anyone remember how exciting it used to be thinking about communicating with someone thousands of kilometres away? I do and now it seems ridiculous. Daily, I instantly communicate with people from five countries and three continents, often it’s more and I don’t think twice about it. I welcome you, Globalisation.

Simple Ways To Help Your Design Suck Less

11th of July, 2007

I often deal with people that have programming and website creation experience but lack any design experience or even common sense in design. Creating things visually pleasing comes naturally to me (I think), I also study the area at a tertiary level. Following some published theories as well as my own aesthetic sense there’s some simple things you can do to create better design. Continue reading →

Twitter and Productivity

10th of July, 2007

I have a theory about Twitter and how much people get done work. People that tweet a lot get a lot done. Twitter is generally regarded (among what I see as unproductive people) as a waste of time, I disagree and even have argument to back up my theory.

Drink More Water With Applescript

8th of July, 2007

Water is good for you. Dumb Little Man gets specific. I like drinking water because it helps me focus. I try to keep a water bottle at my side but often get carried away with whatever I’m doing and I start losing focus before I realise I haven’t had anything to drink in a couple of hours. With the help of Quicksilver, Applescript and cron I’m reminded.

No Flash? I Call That Ad Blocking

7th of July, 2007

John Gruber brought my attention to this man returning his iPhone. His reasons seem valid(ish) but this one’s a joke:

  1. Without Flash, too much of the Web is off limits.

I haven’t visited a website that primarily uses Flash in literally months and the Flash websites I do come across suck. The majority of Flash on the web is used for ads. “too much of the Web”, he’s got to be kidding.

Web App Idea No. 1841

7th of July, 2007

Usually when I get an idea to make something that I think would be cool, I privately add it to a list, I keep it secret and I just never get around to it. I’m going to stop kidding myself and just publish any ideas I have, what’s the point of a good idea if it never gets made? The first is a short review app - let me explain.

My CSS Framework

5th of July, 2007

A few days ago I wrote about CSS frameworks. I was a little disappointed that framework files weren’t included for download. The framework I spoke about was different and I mentioned I don’t actually have a working copy of my ideas, I just thought it’d be great. This afternoon I polished off a rough framework and thought I’d share it with you.

Terror Threat Level

3rd of July, 2007

It turns out a man in Brisbane had something to do with the terrorist plots in the UK. The media reply was so full of gusto it felt like they spend every day just dying for a terrorist story. A story with ties so close to home, even loose ties, is like gold. Continue reading →

How To Stop That Noise When Waking a Macbook

1st of July, 2007

There’s a lot of hurdles when trying to set up your Macbook to work as an alarm clock. I don’t have an alarm clock in my room and I’ve always wanted to wake up to my own music, I thought a computer would solve my problem and it almost has. I’ve got it to a point that’s functional. Continue reading →
