What I’m Looking For in a Camera

30th of May, 2007

Soon I’ll be heading overseas where I’ll spend a bit of time traveling on my own. While I don’t take many photos at home, I’ll be keeping up a a Tumblr log and I’d like to document the journey with more than words. Looking for a suitable piece of electronics like a camera is difficult - this is what I’m looking for. Continue reading →

Vista’s Distortion

29th of May, 2007

Recently I’ve had the pleasure of using used Windows Vista. It wasn’t official use, I’ve just sat in front of it and looked around. One thing really shone through stuck out for me, the ugly distortion Aero uses on it’s title bars and window edges in general. And while they say it’s transparent, it really only blurs the underlying content. It’d difficult to explain the title bar without some screenshots. So here’s some comparisons with OS X. Bryan Veloso and Avalonstar

28th of May, 2007

If you’re a regular reader you’ll know I’m not a huge fan of Byran Veloso or his work. When Avalonstar was taken down, I wasn’t impressed with the reaction. The public’s reaction was sickening, he left a meticulously designed letter, if something really bad had happened, the site wouldn’t have been taken down and no letter would have been left. I don’t normally agree with Paul Scrivens but he could not be more right and I’m so glad Veloso has been called out. Continue reading →

Overseas

26th of May, 2007

I’ve held off writing about this for a really long time. I wanted to wait until it was absolutely certain that I’d be going. After finding out on Thursday that I received a $3000 academic scholarship to be used on the trip I can’t contain my excitement any longer. On the 17th of August I’ll be on a plane to New York City, a week later I’ll be in San Francisco, another week later I’ll be in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where I’ll be spend a semester at Mount Royal College. Continue reading →

A Sliding Hourly Rate

24th of May, 2007

It doesn’t make sense. I first came across a sliding hourly rate on Ranjani’s site and then conversation continued in IRC a little later. Charging a different amount per hour for different kinds of service says your time is less valuable in different situations. Continue reading →

Project Management in OS X and a Retina Burning Interface

22nd of May, 2007

Schoolhouse has spoilt me, where there was once a mess there is now organisation. Beside a few little bugs, it’s scope, level of functionality and beautiful interface is perfect. It makes me a better student. Recently work at Brisbane Creative has picked up and I felt information consistently escaping my mind, I needed a Schoolhouse for my little business, a central hub of organisation, I went on the hunt for some good project management software. Smoking is Unbelievable

21st of May, 2007

This conversation is one I often have at uni after walking through a thick cloud of cigarette smoke found just about everywhere on campus. Smoking is unbelievable, it’s unbelievable that people spend so much time sucking on something that tastes bad, smells horrible, looks disgusting, is toxic, contains tar, contains carcinogens, blackens your teeth and costs a fortune. Continue reading →

Pretty Up Your Terminal

20th of May, 2007

After a short stint with iTerm I came crawling back to OS X’s lovely built-in command line, Terminal. Some applications just shouldn’t have user interface menus, Terminal is one, TextMate is another. Both are simple and highly customisable. I’m the type of person to customise anything I don’t immediately love. It was seeing the beautiful anti-aliased Monaco in TextMate that forced the change in my Terminal. Continue reading →

On The Money

18th of May, 2007

Matt Brett recently blogged about an article on Freelance Switch, “Taking Care of Your Online Persona“. There’s a list of 7 rules you should follow, all lame and Matt Brett calls them out.

I couldn’t care less if you think my work or work ethics are sub par because I swear or post pictures of my cats ballsack on Flickr. If that kind of thing would turn you off working with me, you’re probably not the kind of person I would want to deal with anyway.

Taking Photos of Taking Photos

17th of May, 2007

The advent of digital cameras has created this strange phenomenon. The Onion sums it up well in their article - Evening Events Immediately Recapped With Digital Camera Slide Show:

DENVER—Family and friends attending a two-hour birthday dinner for 26-year-old Josh Kebbekus at The Cheesecake Factory yesterday concluded their meal by watching a slide show of themselves ordering drinks, talking, eating, and taking photos of one another.

My Backflip on Twitter

15th of May, 2007

A few months ago I tried Twitter, then I stopped involuntarily, then I started again and then I wrote about how I was stopping because it was so horrible. Then I kind of accidentally slipped back into it. I don’t even remember how it happened but 300 updates later, I have to say, I’m really enjoying it. Continue reading →

The Scratchit Results

15th of May, 2007

If you voted for the scratchits, I’m disapointed in you. It was probably the most anti-climatic this poll could have been. This afternoon I bought a variety of 13 scratchits and here’s what happened. Continue reading →

The Poll Results

14th of May, 2007

It’s a week later and the poll is over. The winner is the scratchits! This afternoon I’ll head to the newsagent and hand over my almost $30 in change for a variety of scratchits. Then, if I haven’t won hundreds of thousands, I’ll create a nice little table of the results. If I win more than my amount of change, well, I’ll worry about that if it happens. Continue reading →

The New Google Analytics

11th of May, 2007

I’ve been a Google Analytics user, since the early invite only days and I like it a lot. I’ve never been a fan of other, over hyped,  pay per site (or pay at all), self hosted, stats applications. Analytics was always free, powerful and allowed multiple websites to be managed from the same interface. The only problem was an interface that looked like it was from the early ’90s. Small Stylesheets Make For Good Design by Design

10th of May, 2007

Reuse, reuse, reuse! If your stylesheet is 500 lines long, you’re doing something wrong and it’ll show in your design. Website design, or design in general should use consistent presentation for different kinds of elements. CSS makes it easy to make sure elements are perfectly consistent. I’ll often use the exact same set of properties for 6 or 7 selectors. Continue reading →

Flood

9th of May, 2007

In the last couple of weeks I have been reading and watching and listening and reading and listening and watching a huge amount, I can’t get enough. I’ve been spending 3 hours in front of the computer before breakfast, where I spend another hour reading the paper, I start work with talk radio on, Richard Fideler’s conversation hour interests me greatly. When I come across something I like, I get obsessed with it. Here’s something I’ve been obsessed with lately and some other things I’ve been indulging in. Continue reading →

Comment Moderation

8th of May, 2007

There was an argument yesterday about testimonials being put into a moderation queue at iheart.milkcartondesigns.com. The argument then moved onto blog comments, how spam and just general idiots should be dealt with. If you want comments and have a strong, automatic spam fighter such as Akismet I see only one option. Continue reading →

Tell Me How To Spend My Change: Poll

6th of May, 2007

Here’s something different for a change (pun!). I have a piggy bank that I put my spare change into, when I have a spendable amount, I spend it. Anyone that collects change will know it feels like free money, you never save it, you just blow it on whatever. This time I’ve saved AUD$28.60, not a huge amount but enough to safely let you, the reader, decide what I do with it. Continue reading →

Steal Design, Butcher It, Voila!

3rd of May, 2007

If you’re going to rip a design, a design as good as A List Apart’s, haven’t you done it so you have a beautiful website, without the work? Why steal it and then destroy it? It’s doubly stupid. Continue reading →

Digg Gets Pwnd By Its Users, Hilarity Ensues

2nd of May, 2007

There’s a few reasons I don’t like Digg but I won’t go into them for now. What matters is that right now every story on the front page of Digg’s tech section is about the decryption key for HD-DVD that allows you copy HD-DVDs. That key can be found through a quick Google search. Continue reading →

OS Interfaces on the Web

2nd of May, 2007

My job involves dealing with less than top quality hosting providers. Strangely, these also tend to be the most expensive and most popular hosting providers. Something I’ve found they have in common is copying the Windows XP interface for use in their control panels and it looks hideous.

Higher Education

1st of May, 2007

A lot of things about university have been frustrating me lately. So continues my campaign of hate. Today the target is on most of my fellow university students. I’ll start with what set me off. Continue reading →
